Open Forum: Policy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship — A New Roadmap to Urban Innovation?

Eventbrite - Tales from the Crypt

Hosted by CMU with MIT Enterprise Forum of Pittsburgh and TiE

Join the conversation as government and entrepreneurial leaders discuss policy and related challenges of creating a sustainable Innovation Economy. What role do academia, policy makers and entrepreneurs play? What is working and what is missing? Discover first-hand how a possible blueprint for establishing strong relationships among companies and non-profits is creating growth through new partnerships with government.

Internationally recognized as a leader in the “Eds” and “Meds,” Pittsburgh and the surrounding region have also emerged as one of the most fertile landscapes for startups, innovation, and leadership in energy. Recent examples of public and private collaboration include the Oil & Natural Gas development partnership among CONSOL Energy, Allegheny County and the Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA). Two emerging examples include a new innovation initiative, led by the City of Pittsburgh, that is positioned to strengthen the region’s vibrant innovation ecosystem. The other is an unprecedented multi-disciplinary research and educational initiative led by Carnegie Mellon University.

Highlights of the event include:

  • Special Remarks from Deborah Lam, Chief Innovation and Performance Officer of the City of Pittsburgh. Ms. Lam recently returned to Pittsburgh to join Mayor Peduto’s executive team and lead the City of Pittsburgh’s efforts to drive innovation. She will outline a draft of the City’s Innovation Roadmap — an effort that included significant interaction with regional tech leadership – and a first of its kind.
  • Overview of Metro21, the new Carnegie Mellon University multi-disciplinary research and educational initiative designed to research, develop, deploy and evaluate technology and analytically based solutions to the problems facing the systems and infrastructure that serve the quality of life and economy of metro areas.
  • Emerging Urban Innovation Showcase and Networking Reception (with special opening remarks from City of Pittsburgh City Councilman Dan Gilman)

Network with representatives from County and City government, innovation thought leaders, investors, and other regional stakeholders. Listen to the Open Forum roundtable discuss the roles of public and private actors necessary to drive innovation. Engage the Roundtable participants and fellow audience-members on the topical issues of the day.
