RemComm Revolutionizes Emergency Communications During A Disaster

During 9-11, the 2004 tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina, commercial power, telephone, cell phone coverage, and Internet connectivity were compromised. Communications breakdowns hampered search and rescue, and prevented the dissemination of health & welfare information. The need for reliable communications in emergencies is acute.

RemComm has developed a software suite that reconnects communications using readily available laptop computers and battery powered two-way radios. RemComm’s system provides cost-effective and reliable data transfer and data management in the absence of commercial power, Internet, telephone, and cell phone service.

We are pleased to have RemComm CEO Babs Carryer, winner of the $100,000 2006 EnterPrize Business Plan Competition to discuss the progress RemComm is making in the commercialization of software to establish and restore communications in emergencies. We will learn how the company’s groundbreaking efforts to prevent communications crises and promote rescue and recovery operations in the event of accidents, terrorism, natural disasters or other catastrophes are being received in the marketplace.

Noted inventor, entrepreneur, president of DEKA Research, and a tireless advocate for science and technology.

His roles as inventor and advocate are intertwined -- his own passion for technology and its practical uses has driven his personal determination to spread the word about technology's virtues and by so doing to change the culture of the United States. His vast knowledge of the physical sciences, combined with his ability to integrate the fundamental laws of physics with the most modern technologies, has led to the development of breakthrough processes and products.

As an inventor, he holds more than 440 US and foreign patents, many of them for innovative medical devices that have expanded the frontiers of health care worldwide. While still a college undergraduate, he invented the first wearable infusion pump, which rapidly gained acceptance from such diverse medical specialties as chemotherapy, neonatology, and endocrinology. In 1976, he founded his first medical device company, AutoSyringe, Inc., to manufacture and market the pumps. At age 30, he sold that company to Baxter International Corporation. By then, he had added a number of other infusion devices, including the first insulin pump for diabetics. Following the sale of AutoSyringe, Inc., he founded DEKA Research & Development Corporation to develop internally generated inventions as well as to provide R&D for major corporate clients.

Among Kamen's proudest accomplishments is founding FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organization dedicated to motivating the next generation to understand, use, and enjoy science and technology.

Kamen was awarded the National Medal of Technology by President Clinton in 2000 for inventions that have advanced medical care worldwide, and for innovative and imaginative leadership in awakening America to the excitement of science and technology. He was also awarded the Lemelson-MIT Prize in 2002, and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in May 2005.

Mediterranean Wellness’s Dr. Will Clower – A Brand with Personality -- On Becoming the Diet World’s Martha Stewart

We are pleased to introduce April’s featured entrepreneur -- Dr. Will Clower, President and CEO of Mediterranean Wellness. This award winning author, national media personality, and entrepreneur has earned a reputation for offering common sense solutions to the unhealthy eating habits that are creating an American crisis.

Dr. Clower’s first two books -- "The French Don't Diet" and “The Fat Fallacy” -- lauded the health benefits of a Mediterranean lifestyle. Will has now transformed that success into a scalable business model with a series of innovative employee wellness programs. This emerging segment is being driven by widespread realization of the payback offered by investments in preventative care for insurers, including self-insured firms.

Will’s program has proven its marketability with adoption by Fortune 500 corporations, hospitals, and wellness centers across the country. Will is now preparing for a national launch and his pitch to VC’s is designed to raise the capital to support the rollout of a scalable employee wellness model. To learn more about Will’s program, go to www.willclower.com.

The challenge: convince VC’s that he can reduce America's "bottom lines" while increasing that of his investors in the process. This MIT Forum will help Dr. Clower craft his message so he can be sure to bring home the bacon, er…, we mean bring home the paté !
