The First Annual Solutions for Society - |
Humanitarians, business executives, angel investors, community leaders and educators joined together on April 16th in the Philip-Chosky Theater on CMU"s campus to seek out solutions for society. This was the first annual event organized by the D"Appolonia family in conjunction with the MIT Enterprise Forum and Pittsburgh Social Venture Partners in honor of David D"Appolonia, a devoted philanthropist, accomplished businessman and Pittsburgh native. World-renowned social activists and founders of the Positive Deviance Initiative, Jerry and Monique Sternin, presented a program on Positive Deviance followed by a special networking reception. The Positive Deviance Initiative is aimed at helping communities scale up solutions that are already working within those communities, rather than engineering a solution based on an external formula. The model has been successfully tackling serious issues around the world such as; malnutrition in Viet Nam; girl trafficking in Indonesia; school performance in the United States; pharmaceutical sales in Latin America; family planning in Guatemala; and many other challenges requiring diverse applications. Locally, Jerry and Monique have helped Dr. Jon Lloyd and the Veterans Health Administrations Hospital of Pittsburgh implement Positive Deviance on their quest to eliminate a deadly but common hospital bacterium known as MRSA or Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. Dr. Jon Lloyd, MRSA Prevention Coordinator for the Center for Disease Control and VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, will be participating in the event on April 16th and sharing his remarkable story. "Dave D"Appolonia believed that people learn best when they discover things for themselves," said Max Miller, Managing Partner and Founder, Raise Your Spirits and MC for the event. "Positive Deviance is founded on the same belief – sustainable change comes from within and can create new opportunity – against all odds." As part of the annual event, two awards will be given in honor of Dave, as a tribute to people in the Pittsburgh region who embody his commitment to business and philanthropy. The first award will be given to an individual who exhibits entrepreneurial excellence; the second award will be given to an individual who shows dedication to social change. This special event invites you to learn about the formula for Positive Deviance, hear exceptional stories of change within societies, and discover a "how-to" approach to positive deviance that could be applied within organizations, institutions, or your own life.

Microsoft has declared they have a vision for speech technology. Every computer they ship contains the ability for text documents to be "read aloud" automatically using a program called Text-to-Speech or TTS. Other companies focus on delivering this technology into vertical markets such as telephony ("your bank account balance is…" ) or navigation systems. ("turn left on Forbes Avenue"). Carson Street company Cepstral, www.cepstral.com, founded in 2000, provides speech technologies and services for the spoken delivery of information. In addition to building Text to Speech (TTS) engines, they have launched a new service called Valley Forge which initially provides over 30 different "character" and celebrity voices. The aim is to make the internet "talk" by bringing this technology down to a fun and easy level that might be adopted by millions of internet users. Come join Craig Campbell, Cepstral CEO as he shares the business challenge of effectively focusing the marketing and product offering to bring TTS to mainstream consumer markets like social networks, online games, and media/blog sites. And, how best convince investors of the potential value of this business opportunity? Providing commentary and feedback is an expert panel that includes:
